Artificial Intelligence’s rapid advancement has ushered in a new era, but it also brought the peril of deep fake technology. While initially for entertainment, scammers now exploit it, wreaking havoc with fraudulent schemes.
XRP Scam Alert
A recent wave of scams involving Ripple’s XRP has flooded various social media platforms. Using AI to replicate Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse’s voice and appearance, scammers push a bogus XRP giveaway. The fabricated video pitches a deal: “Send 1,000 XRP, get double in return.” Yet, discrepancies in mouth movements in the video have raised suspicions.
One XRP enthusiast, Shen, on social media likened these deepfake videos to a viral threat. Criticizing platforms’ failure to authenticate content, Shen cited similar instances involving personalities like @elonmusk. He lamented platforms cracking down on ad-blockers but neglecting scam-based ads, highlighting their profit-centric approach.
Tim Draper’s Caution
Bitcoin advocate Tim Draper issued a stark warning about AI voice cloning scams. Draper affirmed he’d never solicit money in such a manner, stressing that scammers misuse his voice to lure individuals into sending cryptocurrency. He urged people to never comply with requests for crypto/money from unknown sources, stating unequivocally, “If anyone asks, it is not me. They are thieves.”
This cautionary tale underlines the need for vigilance in an age where AI’s capabilities are exploited for deceitful gains. Vigilance is key to safeguarding against these sophisticated and malicious scams.
