3.16 million people have registered World ID so far
Alex Branier, CEO and co-founder of Tools for Humanity, the developer of the cryptocurrency Worldcoin, announced on the 24th that the company will be redesigning its eye scanning device, the Orb. TechCrunch reported.
Branier said the new look orb will be released in the first half of 2024, with changes to color and shape to make it look “more friendly.” He continued that the overall impression will be similar to “Apple products.”
“Orb” is a spherical device that identifies an individual by scanning the iris of the user’s eye and generates a unique ID (World ID). It uses OpenAI algorithm technology.

Users with World ID can periodically request free distribution of the unique token WLD on the World app. Currently, the device is about the size of a bowling ball and shaped like a metal eyeball.
As of January 27, it has been 186 days since World Coin was launched. 2,000 orbs have been produced, and World ID users are in 120 countries.
According to World Coin’s official website, there have been approximately 3.16 million World ID registrations so far, and approximately 180,000 new accounts have been created in the past seven days. World Coin’s vision is to provide basic income to people all over the world in the form of virtual currency in the modern era where AI is on the rise.

A program has also been launched to provide approximately 740 million yen ($5 million) in grants to World Coin developers. One of the goals is to decentralize orb manufacturing. The background to this is that it aims to become part of the global digital infrastructure, and cited the need to ensure robustness and neutrality similar to the Internet.

World Coin has also made the iris recognition system pipeline (procedural flow) “IRIS” open source. IRIS is a step-by-step process that converts an iris image into an iris code that identifies the individual with that iris.
Open sourcing will increase the transparency of WorldCoin’s system and provide the broader community with the ability to run, build, and experiment with cutting-edge technology in iris recognition.
Tools for Humanity is the company behind WorldCoin, a cryptocurrency project that Brannier co-founded with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others.
