As Meta and Twitter expand their initiatives in the metaverse and Web3 industry, YouTube doesn’t want to feel left behind.
A recent blog post by YouTube’s Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan acknowledged the opportunities for creators that would come with Web3 and hinted at possible NFT and blockchain-related integrations.
“We believe new technologies like blockchain and NFTs can allow creators to build deeper relationships with their fans,” Mohan wrote in the blog post. “Together, they’ll be able to collaborate on new projects and make money in ways not previously possible.”
While the blog post wasn’t detail-oriented with respect to YouTube’s NFT-related efforts, it offered some broad examples of how the video streaming giant may leverage the technology. Mohan noted:
“For example, giving a verifiable way for fans to own unique videos, photos, art, and even experiences from their favorite creators could be a compelling prospect for creators and their audiences. There’s a lot to consider in making sure we approach these new technologies responsibly, but we think there’s incredible potential as well.”
Mohan’s sentiments on NFTs resonated with that of YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, who recently called cryptocurrency, DAOs, and NFTs a “previously unimaginable opportunity to grow the connection between creators and their fans” in an open letter last month.
