Ethereum decides the range of the next upgrade “Denkun” | CoinDesk JAPAN | Coin Desk Japan

Ethereum developers agreed June 8 on the scope of the next upgrade called “Dencun”.

An upgrade (also known as a hard fork) planned for later this year will include five Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at adding storage for data and reducing fees.

The centerpiece of the upgrade is EIP4844, more commonly known as “proto-dunk sharding”. Scaling the blockchain by increasing the space for temporarily storing data is expected to reduce gas costs (transaction fees) for Rollup, a Layer 2 solution.

Other EIPs are listed below.

• EIP1153: Reduce transaction fees and improve block space for storing data on-chain
• EIP4788: Improved bridge and staking pool design
• EIP5656: Minor Code Change for Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)
• EIP6780: Eliminate code that could terminate smart contracts

“Nor will we add anything else to the fork,” said Tim Beiko, head of protocol support for the Ethereum Foundation, at an official core developer online conference on Wednesday.

The exact date for the hard fork has not been revealed, but it is expected to take place before the end of 2023.

The name “Denkun” is a combination of the names of the simultaneous upgrades on the two main layers. The execution layer will have the upgrade “Cancun” and the consensus layer will have the upgrade “Deneb”.

Now that the developers have a complete picture of Denkun, more rigorous upgrade testing will begin.
